For most drivers, the best starting point is simple: use the tire size listed on your current sidewall or the vehicle information sticker inside the driver’s door. How to Read a Tire Size
A common passenger tire size looks like this: P225/65R17 102H. Each part describes a different part of the tire’s fit and capability.
The first letter, P, means P-metric, a sizing system commonly used for passenger vehicles in the United States. You may also see LT for light truck tires, which are built for vehicles that regularly carry heavier loads, tow, or travel on demanding terrain. Some tires have no letter before the numbers, often indicating a Euro-metric size. They can appear similar, but load calculations may differ, so matching the vehicle requirement matters.
The 225 is the tire width in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. A wider tire can provide a larger contact patch, which may improve dry-road grip. It can also affect steering feel, fuel economy, snow performance, clearance, and road noise. Wider is not automatically better for every vehicle or every driver.
The 65 is the aspect ratio. It tells you the sidewall height as a percentage of the tire width. In this example, the sidewall height is 65 percent of 225 millimeters. A higher aspect ratio usually means a taller sidewall and a more forgiving ride. A lower aspect ratio generally creates a shorter, more responsive sidewall, but it can make pothole impacts feel harsher and leave less protection for the wheel.
The R means radial construction, which is standard on modern passenger and light truck tires. The 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. A tire marked R17 must be installed on a 17-inch wheel. This number is not flexible: a 16-inch or 18-inch tire will not fit the same wheel.
After the main size, 102 is the load index and H is the speed rating. These ratings are just as important as the width, aspect ratio, and wheel diameter.

The load index indicates how much weight one tire can carry at its specified inflation pressure. A higher number represents a greater load capacity. It also does not automatically mean the tire is the right choice for your vehicle.
Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation whenever possible. Installing a tire with a lower load index or speed rating than specified can compromise safety and may affect handling, braking, or durability. You can also find size information in the owner’s manual and on the current tire sidewall. If the tires on the vehicle were installed by a previous owner, however, the sidewall may not show the original approved size. That is why checking the door placard or owner’s manual is a smart first step.
Do not rely on wheel diameter alone. Two tires can both fit a 17-inch wheel yet have very different overall diameters, widths, load capacities, and clearances. A correct fit needs more than the final number in the tire size.
Can You Change Tire Sizes?
Sometimes, yes. Drivers may choose a different tire size to replace damaged wheels, improve off-road capability, create a different appearance, or support a specific driving need. But changing size should be done carefully.
The overall tire diameter affects speedometer and odometer accuracy. A tire that is significantly taller than original rotates fewer times per mile, so the speedometer may read lower than your actual speed. A shorter tire can cause the opposite effect. Major changes can also affect transmission shift points, traction-control systems, anti-lock braking systems, wheel well clearance, and suspension movement.

Use the cold tire pressure listed on the vehicle placard, not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Check pressure at least once a month and before long trips, especially when temperatures change.
