Modern tires are built with layers of rubber, fabric cords, and steel belts that work together to carry the vehicle’s weight and absorb road impacts. When those internal layers break or separate, air pressure pushes outward and creates a visible lump.

Most bubbles appear on the sidewall, often after the tire strikes a pothole, curb, road debris, or a sharp edge. Sidewalls are designed to flex, but they do not have the same reinforced belt package found beneath the tread. That makes a damaged sidewall especially vulnerable.

The concern is not simply that the bubble could get bigger. The internal cords that help the tire hold its shape may already be broken. The remaining rubber is then carrying pressure it was never designed to handle. Even if the tire still holds air and feels normal during a short drive, its strength has been compromised.

A sudden tire failure can make the vehicle harder to control. It is particularly risky on highways, during lane changes, when towing, or on wet roads where traction is already reduced. For family vehicles, daily commuters, SUVs, and light trucks, replacing the damaged tire is a much safer decision than trying to get more use out of it.

Why Tire Bubbles Form

Road impacts are the most common cause. A deep pothole can pinch the tire between the wheel and the road surface, damaging the cords inside the sidewall. Even an impact that does not immediately cause a flat can create a bubble later.

Curb strikes are another frequent cause. Parking too close to a curb, scraping a curb during a turn, or hitting one while avoiding traffic can damage the tire’s sidewall. The mark may be small on the outside, while the internal damage is more serious.

Low tire pressure can make impact damage more likely. An underinflated tire has less support when it hits a pothole or sharp edge, allowing the sidewall to compress more severely. Overloading a vehicle can add stress as well, especially when a tire is already low on air.

In some cases, age, prior damage, or a manufacturing defect may contribute to a structural separation. However, it is difficult to identify the exact cause by appearance alone. A tire professional can inspect the tire, wheel, and surrounding components to help determine whether impact damage is likely.

Potholes Create a Real Risk

Potholes are a regular part of driving in many areas, particularly after freeze-thaw cycles. The impact can be severe enough to damage a tire, bend a wheel, or affect alignment. If you hit a pothole hard, inspect the tires as soon as it is safe to do so. Look for sidewall bulges, cuts, scuffs, sudden pressure loss, vibration, or a steering wheel that no longer feels centered.

What to Do If You Find a Bubble in Your Tire

Do not try to press the bubble back into shape, patch it, or continue driving until your next scheduled service. Sidewall damage cannot be safely repaired because the tire’s internal reinforcement has been affected.

If you spot a bubble while parked at home or work, leave the vehicle parked if possible. Use your spare tire if it is properly inflated, compatible with your vehicle, and safe to install. Keep in mind that temporary spare tires have speed and distance limits, so they are only meant to get you to a tire service location.

If you discover a bulge while driving, reduce speed smoothly, avoid hard braking or abrupt steering, and pull over when it is safe. Do not continue on the highway just because the tire has not gone flat. Roadside assistance or a tow may be the better option when there is no safe spare available.

A qualified tire technician should inspect the damaged tire and the wheel. A hard impact can also bend a rim, which may cause an air leak or vibration after the new tire is installed. Checking the tire pressure in the other tires is worthwhile too, since correct inflation helps reduce the chance of future impact damage.

Can a Tire Bubble Be Repaired?

No. A tire bubble requires tire replacement.

Puncture repairs are sometimes possible when damage is limited to a repairable area of the tread and the tire has not been driven while flat. A bubble is different. It points to broken or separated internal cords, and no plug, patch, sealant, or added air pressure can restore the tire’s original strength.

Be cautious about temporary fixes suggested for other tire problems. Inflating the tire to a different pressure will not make a bubble safe. Neither will moving the tire to the rear axle. The damage remains, and the tire can still fail under load.

Do You Need to Replace One Tire or More?

It depends on the vehicle, drivetrain, tread depth, and the condition of the remaining tires. If the other tires are relatively new and the replacement tire closely matches their size, type, and tread depth, replacing one tire may be reasonable for many vehicles.

For all-wheel-drive vehicles, tire circumference differences can matter more. A new tire with much deeper tread than the others may rotate at a different speed, placing unnecessary strain on drivetrain components. In that situation, a technician may recommend replacing more than one tire or selecting a compatible solution based on the manufacturer’s guidance.

For the best handling, it is generally wise to match tire type, size, load rating, and speed rating across the same axle. Mixing an all-season tire with a winter tire, for example, can create uneven traction and handling. A tire professional can help you find the right fit for your vehicle and driving conditions.

How to Spot Problems Before They Become Worse

A quick visual check once a month can help you catch tire issues early. Check both sidewalls, not only the tread that faces outward. Look for bulges, deep cuts, exposed cords, cracks, uneven wear, and objects embedded in the tread.

Also check tire pressure when the tires are cold, using the pressure listed on your vehicle’s door placard rather than the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall. Proper inflation supports predictable handling, tire life, and fuel efficiency. It also gives the tire a better chance of absorbing everyday road imperfections without excessive flexing.

After a hard pothole strike or curb impact, pay attention to new vibration, pulling, a low-pressure warning, or changes in steering feel. These signs do not always mean there is a bubble, but they are good reasons to have the tires and wheels inspected.

A tire bubble is one of those problems where acting early makes the decision simple: replace the damaged tire, inspect the wheel, and get back on the road with confidence instead of gambling on a weakened sidewall.
