A tire can look like the correct size and still be the wrong choice for your vehicle. The load index is one of the numbers that prevents that mistake. If you searched for “load index explained tires,” you are likely trying to determine whether a tire can safely carry your vehicle, passengers, cargo, and the occasional weekend load.

For everyday drivers, the simplest rule is this: choose replacement tires with at least the load index specified by your vehicle manufacturer. A higher load index can be appropriate when it is available in the correct size and approved for your vehicle. A lower one is not a safe substitute.

What Is a Tire Load Index?

A tire load index is a numerical code that shows the maximum weight one tire can carry at its maximum rated inflation pressure. You will find it in the tire size marking on the sidewall, immediately before the speed rating.

For example, a tire marked 225/65R17 102H has a load index of 102. The letter H is the speed rating. These are separate ratings, so one does not tell you the other.

The index itself is not a weight in pounds or kilograms. It is a code that corresponds to a maximum load on a standardized chart. As the number rises, the amount of weight the tire can support rises too. A load index of 91 supports less weight than a load index of 102, even if both tires share the same wheel diameter.

This rating matters because every tire on the vehicle has work to do. Together, the tires must support the vehicle’s curb weight plus people, luggage, work equipment, groceries, a hitch-mounted carrier, or anything else you bring along.

Why the Load Index on Tires Matters

Your vehicle manufacturer selects a minimum tire load capacity based on the vehicle’s weight and intended use. That capacity also accounts for how weight moves while driving. Braking shifts load toward the front tires. Cornering shifts it side to side. A loaded trunk, cargo area, or pickup bed can place more demand on the rear tires.

Using tires with too low a load index can create excessive heat and sidewall stress. It may reduce handling stability, especially when the vehicle is full or carrying cargo. In severe situations, overloading can contribute to tire damage or failure.

A proper load index is especially relevant for SUVs, minivans, light trucks, EVs, and vehicles that regularly carry families or equipment. Electric vehicles often weigh more than comparable gas-powered models because of their battery packs. That does not mean every EV requires a special tire, but it does mean matching the specified load rating is essential.

Winter driving adds another reason to get the basics right. Snow tires improve cold-weather grip, but their load capacity still needs to meet your vehicle’s requirement. Seasonal tire changes are a good time to confirm that both tire sets have the appropriate rating.

How to Find Your Vehicle’s Required Load Index

Start with the tire information label on the driver-side door jamb. It usually lists the original tire size and recommended cold tire pressure. Your owner’s manual can provide additional tire specifications, including approved size and load options.

The original equipment tire sidewall is another useful reference if it is still fitted and is the correct tire for the vehicle. Look for the number after the tire construction and rim diameter. In 215/60R16 95V, the 95 is the load index.

Do not rely on tire size alone. Two tires in the same size may have different load indexes. For instance, one 235/55R19 tire may carry a 101 rating while another has a 105 rating. The physical dimensions can be similar, but their load capacity is not.

If your vehicle has different tire sizes on the front and rear, check each axle specification carefully. The same applies to vehicles with staggered wheel setups, performance packages, or optional wheel sizes. When you are uncertain, use your vehicle details and ask a tire professional to confirm fitment before ordering.

A Quick Example of Load Capacity

Suppose each tire is rated to carry 1,874 pounds. Four tires provide a combined theoretical capacity of 7,496 pounds. That does not mean you should load the vehicle to that number. The vehicle’s own weight, axle limits, suspension capacity, and manufacturer-rated cargo capacity still apply.

The purpose of this example is to show why the rating is per tire, not per vehicle. It also explains why a single damaged, underinflated, or incorrectly rated tire can affect how the whole vehicle performs.

Can You Use a Higher Load Index?

Often, yes. A higher load index than the original specification is generally acceptable when the tire is an approved fit for your vehicle and meets the required speed rating. It can be a practical choice for drivers who frequently carry passengers, use a cargo box, tow within their vehicle’s limits, or drive a light truck with a working load.

Still, higher is not automatically better in every situation. Higher-load tires may have a firmer construction, which can slightly change ride comfort. They can also be heavier, and available options may differ by tire size, season, or vehicle application. Running a tire below the pressure listed on your vehicle’s door-jamb label can reduce its effective load-carrying ability. It also increases heat buildup, uneven wear, and the chance of poor handling. Overinflating a tire above the vehicle recommendation is not a way to safely increase the vehicle’s payload capacity. It can reduce the contact patch and make the ride harsher.

These tires should be selected based on the vehicle placard, intended use, wheel rating, and manufacturer guidance.

Some passenger tires are marked XL, meaning Extra Load. An XL tire can support more weight than a standard-load tire in the same size when inflated to its specified maximum pressure. Common Load Index Mistakes to Avoid

Drivers also sometimes calculate only the total weight they expect to carry and overlook uneven loading.
