A dashboard tire-pressure warning can feel minor, especially when the vehicle still drives normally. But tire sensors are designed to catch a problem before low pressure affects handling, braking, tire wear, or fuel use. Treat the warning as an early signal to check your tires, not a light to ignore until your next service visit.
For everyday drivers, the goal is simple: keep each tire inflated to the pressure specified by your vehicle manufacturer, check the tires for visible damage, and have the system inspected if the warning does not clear. A working tire pressure monitoring system, often called TPMS, adds another layer of confidence when you are commuting, carrying family, or heading out on a long drive.
What tire sensors actually do
Most newer vehicles use direct TPMS. In this system, a small sensor is mounted inside each wheel, usually at the base of the valve stem. It measures the air pressure in that tire and sends a wireless signal to the vehicle. When pressure drops below the vehicle’s programmed threshold, the TPMS warning light comes on.
Some vehicles use an indirect system instead. Rather than measuring pressure inside the tire, it compares wheel-speed data to identify a tire that is rotating differently from the others. A low tire can have a slightly smaller rolling circumference, which may trigger the warning. Indirect systems do not have a sensor inside every wheel, but they still need to be reset or calibrated after certain tire services.
Neither type replaces regular tire checks. TPMS is meant to warn about underinflation, not confirm that every tire is in perfect condition. It may not identify a sidewall cut, uneven tread wear, a loose wheel, or a tire that is technically inflated but still unsafe due to damage.
A warning light is not always a flat tire
When the TPMS light comes on steadily, one or more tires may be below the recommended pressure. Temperature changes are a common reason. Cold weather can lower tire pressure enough to trigger the light, particularly after a sharp overnight temperature drop. That does not mean the warning is a false alarm. The tire still needs air if it is below the pressure shown on the driver’s door-jamb label.
Check pressure when the tires are cold, ideally before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. Use a quality tire gauge rather than judging by appearance. Modern tires can look reasonably full even when they are significantly underinflated.
If the light flashes for a period and then stays on, the system may be reporting a fault instead of low pressure. A sensor battery could be weak, a sensor may be damaged, or the vehicle may not be receiving a signal correctly. In that case, adding air alone will not solve the issue.
If a tire loses pressure repeatedly, do not keep topping it up without finding the cause. A nail or screw, a leaking valve component, corrosion around the wheel bead, or wheel damage can all cause a slow leak. A proper inspection can determine whether a repair is appropriate or whether the tire needs replacement.
Why proper pressure matters more than many drivers think
Tire pressure affects how the tire carries the weight of your vehicle. When pressure is too low, more of the tire flexes against the road. That extra flex creates heat and can accelerate shoulder wear. It may also make steering feel less precise and increase fuel consumption.
Overinflation is not the answer. Too much air can reduce the tire’s contact patch, contribute to center tread wear, and make the ride feel harsher. The pressure molded into the sidewall is the tire’s maximum pressure rating, not usually the recommended operating pressure for your particular vehicle.
Always use the pressure specification on the vehicle placard, typically located inside the driver’s door area. Front and rear tires may require different pressures. If you carry heavy cargo, tow a trailer, or use a light truck for work, consult your owner’s manual for the correct loaded-pressure guidance.
When tire sensors need attention
TPMS sensors are durable, but they are not permanent. Direct sensors contain a sealed battery that commonly lasts for years, though its actual life depends on the sensor design, driving habits, and climate. When the battery reaches the end of its service life, the full sensor usually needs replacement.
Tire service is also a key time to inspect tire sensors. Removing a tire from the wheel requires care around the sensor and valve stem. The valve seal, cap, and related service components can wear over time, and a damaged valve stem can cause a slow air leak. A trained technician can inspect these parts while the tire is off the wheel.
Sensor service may be needed after a tire replacement, wheel replacement, impact with a pothole or curb, or repeated TPMS warning. Some vehicles also require a relearn procedure after sensor replacement, tire rotation, or switching between summer and winter wheel sets. This process teaches the vehicle which sensor belongs in each wheel position.
A relearn is not the same as inflating the tires. The correct pressure must be set first. Then the system is reset or programmed according to the vehicle’s procedure. Depending on the vehicle, this may happen automatically after driving, through the dashboard menu, or with diagnostic equipment.
Winter wheels, seasonal changeovers, and TPMS
Drivers who use separate winter wheels have an extra decision to make. A second set of wheels can have its own compatible tire sensors, allowing the vehicle to monitor pressure in both seasonal setups. This is the most convenient option, but it adds to the upfront cost of the wheel package.
It is also possible to use winter wheels without sensors on some vehicles, but the TPMS warning may remain on and the vehicle will not monitor tire pressure through its usual system. Whether this is practical depends on the vehicle and the driver’s comfort level with checking pressure manually. For many Canadian drivers facing major seasonal temperature swings, working sensors on both wheel sets can be worthwhile.
During a seasonal changeover, ask for the tire pressures to be set correctly for the incoming tires and for any TPMS warnings to be checked before leaving. Winter tires, all-weather tires, and all-season tires may be different sizes or have different load requirements, so the vehicle placard and fitment details still matter.
What not to do when the TPMS light appears
Do not assume the system is wrong just because the tires look normal. Do not inflate all four tires to the same random number, either. Start with the vehicle placard, measure each tire, and adjust as needed. Check the spare as well if your vehicle has one, since some vehicles monitor the spare tire while others do not.
Avoid using tire sealant unless it is specifically appropriate for the situation and your vehicle. Some sealants can complicate tire repairs and may interfere with sensor service. If you have a puncture, a tire professional can assess the location and size of the damage to determine if a repair can be performed safely.
Finally, do not delay if the tire is visibly low, the vehicle pulls to one side, vibration develops, or you hear a repeated thumping sound. Pull over safely and inspect the tire. Driving on a severely underinflated tire can damage its internal structure even if it holds air again later.
Keep the system useful with routine checks
A TPMS warning is helpful, but a monthly pressure check remains good tire care. Check pressures before road trips, after major temperature changes, and whenever the vehicle has been sitting for an extended period. Include tread depth and visible-condition checks while you are there.
When it is time for new tires, rotation, balancing, or a seasonal changeover, mention any TPMS warning or recent pressure loss to the service team.
